Project Description

The Medici family pattern

Deruta County fondo giallo

A Renaissance design created in Deruta for the Medici in the second half of the 16th century.

In the 1920’s the American publisher, William Randolph Hearst bought three pieces of the Medici set when they came up for auction at Sotheby’s, New York. At Hearst’s death, they were the donated to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, hence, the name of the pattern.

A polychrome version of this pattern can be seen on the floor tiles in the sacristy of San Pietro, Perugia, dating from 1563 and attributed to the workshop of Giacomo Mancini, otherwise known as El Frate.
